I find that the beginning is the best place to start a story like this. I was born in New Haven, Connecticut (Yale New Haven Hospital, to be exact). I grew up in the tiny town of Montross, Virginia. When I say tiny I mean population 315, according to the 2000 census. During my freshman year in high school my family moved to Philadelphia and I stayed there until I graduated from college.
For a long time I wanted to be a poet or some sort of creative writer. I went to the Young Writer's Workshop at the University of Virginia all through high school. One year my poetry teacher, one of the most brilliant poets I've ever met, told us that her poetry had earned her around eight dollars that year and that was about average. So I decided a plan B was in order. I had always admired Lois Lane and decided journalism was the route for me. Or a ballerina.
I love to read and I alternate reading fiction and nonfiction. Right now I'm reading Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed by Jared Diamond. Before that I read The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.
I live in Charlotte now with my husband, Jason, and our ridiculous dog Zooey. She amuses us to no end. She can roll over and high five.
And now for some trivia:
Carolyn has...
...competed in a POG competition.
...sort of met film director Kevin Smith. My friend and I literally ran into the side of him at a comic book convention.
...been riding horses for about 15 years.
...been dancing ballet and pointe for what feels like forever.
...been in David Broder's office.
...performed on a Carnival cruise ship. I was a gymnast for many years and my gymnastics team did an hour-long exhibition show while docked at Nassau. We couldn't perform while at sea for fear of the boat rocking and all of us ending up seriously injured.
